Sql regex numbers only

I hate regular expressions. I come across them fairly regularly in my job and every time I think 'not again'. I find the syntax of regular expressions impossible to remember - and the surrounding code in each language is completely different too. Each language has its own distinct way of doing it. As we were converting our Shell scripts to Python anyway I thought I could rewrite it in Python and go over the file once instead of 20 times and use the Regex engine of Python to extract the same information.
